Heatmap Charts in Analytics

In WebPT’s Analytics platform, heatmaps are a rectangular arrangement of boxes that use size and color to help visualize complex data values and relationships. The color intensity—which shifts within a range—and the size of the boxes indicate the relative performance of the values. This allows you to easily discover hidden trends or outliers at a glance.

Heatmaps can be created for all Analysis Grid reports using the Add Chart button. For this example, we’ll look at the Cancels Analysis Grid.

  1. Label Column: The data column selected is used to create and label each rectangle within the heatmap. In this example, each rectangle represents a cancel reason.
  2. Size Column: The data selected here determines the sizes of the rectangles proportional to the aggregate selected in the second drop-down. In this example, the size of each square shows the total number of cancels for that reason.
  3. Color Column: The column data determines how the color will be allocated to each rectangle based on the aggregate, using a high-to-low gradient. The color helps visualizes the disparity between the highest and lowest values (green to red).In this example, the highest use cancel reason will appear bright green, and the lowest use will appear red, based on the distinct number of patients who used that cancel reason.

In the example above, the rectangle's (or cell's) size represents the total amount of cancels for each cancel reason. The cell color represents the total number of patients who have provided that cancel reason, from red (low) to green (high). The relationship isn't linear but we can still see those reasons with small, red cells were given fewer times by fewer patients than reasons with large, green cells.

"Greener" cells have a higher number of uses. This allows us to compare a cancel reason’s popularity (size) to its total number of users (color).
